What Is a Childcare First Aid Course in NSW?

HLTAID012 — Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting — is the mandatory first aid qualification for all NSW childcare educators, early childhood teachers, and education support staff working in ACECQA-regulated settings.

HLTAID012 is specifically designed for childcare environments. Unlike the standard HLTAID011 First Aid course, it incorporates paediatric-specific techniques, infant CPR ratios, child choking responses, and the emergency procedures most relevant to early childhood settings across NSW.

Under the National Quality Standard and the Education and Care Services National Law, every childcare service in NSW must maintain a sufficient number of educators with current HLTAID012 on-site during all operating hours. Failure to comply risks ACECQA action and service suspension.

Prudent Training delivers HLTAID012 through Allens Training RTO 90909. The course combines flexible online theory with a practical assessment at a venue in Western Sydney. Your certificate is issued by Allens Training on the same day your practical is completed.

HLTAID012 vs Standard First Aid

Why Childcare First Aid Is Different from Standard First Aid

Many NSW childcare educators hold HLTAID011. However, ACECQA requires HLTAID012 specifically. Here is why the distinction matters.

Paediatric Focus

HLTAID012 dedicates significantly more time to infant and child-specific emergencies. CPR ratios, choking responses, and medication administration all differ for paediatric patients — this content is not covered adequately in HLTAID011.

ACECQA Mandated

HLTAID011 alone does not satisfy the ACECQA requirement for childcare settings. NSW services must have staff holding HLTAID012 on-site during all operating hours to maintain National Quality Standard compliance.

Medication Administration

HLTAID012 covers the use of EpiPens, Adrenaline Auto-Injectors, and asthma inhalers in children — content that is not included or emphasised in the standard HLTAID011 First Aid course.

Education Setting Context

The course uses scenarios and practical exercises drawn directly from childcare and early learning environments rather than generic workplace settings — making it immediately applicable to your daily role.
