What You'll Learn in the HLTAID009 CPR Course
The HLTAID009 Provide CPR course follows the latest Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines. It is the CPR qualification recognised by SafeWork NSW, ACECQA, and all major Sydney employers for workplace first aid compliance.
The course covers CPR for adults, children, and infants — reflecting different compression techniques and ratios across age groups. AED (Automated External Defibrillator) training is included because early defibrillation doubles survival rates in cardiac arrest.
The Australian Resuscitation Council requires CPR skills to be practised and assessed annually because compression techniques and guidelines are regularly updated. Even minor deviations from current protocols reduce CPR effectiveness in real emergencies — which is why annual renewal is non-negotiable under NSW law.
- DRSABCD emergency action plan — Danger, Response, Send for help, Airway, Breathing, CPR, Defibrillation
- Adult CPR — 30 compressions : 2 breaths ratio, correct hand placement and compression depth
- Child CPR — adjusted compression force and rescue breathing for children aged 1–8
- Infant CPR — 2-finger technique, correct compression depth for babies under 12 months
- AED defibrillator use — attaching pads, delivering shocks, continuing CPR cycles
- Managing an unresponsive, non-breathing casualty
- Calling emergency services — triple zero (000) procedures and information handover
- Chain of survival — early recognition, early CPR, early defibrillation, early advanced care
- Rescue breathing — mouth-to-mouth and mouth-to-mask techniques
- CPR fatigue management — rotating rescuers in a two-person CPR scenario
12 mo
CPR renewal cycle. Regardless of what other first aid qualifications you hold, CPR must be refreshed every 12 months under Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines.

CPR Compliance in NSW
Who Needs CPR Certification in Sydney?
SafeWork NSW requires all designated first aiders in Australian workplaces to hold a current CPR certificate renewed annually. This applies regardless of which first aid qualification they hold — including HLTAID011 and HLTAID012 holders whose CPR component has lapsed.
Beyond workplace compliance, CPR is the single most important life-saving skill anyone in Sydney can have. Over 30,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur in Australia each year. Bystander CPR before an ambulance arrives doubles or triples survival rates — making every person who knows CPR a potential life saver.
- First aiders renewing annual CPR component
- Construction & Trades workers — SafeWork NSW mandated
- Childcare & education staff — ACECQA compliance
- Healthcare & allied health workers
- Security & facility management personnel
- Fitness & sports coaches across Sydney
- Parents, grandparents, and carers
- NSW school staff and volunteers

CPR Courses — Common Questions
HLTAID009 Provide CPR covers the DRSABCD emergency action plan, adult CPR (30:2 compressions to breaths), child CPR, infant CPR (2-finger technique), AED defibrillator use, rescue breathing, and managing an unresponsive non-breathing casualty. The course follows the latest Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines.
CPR certificates (HLTAID009) are valid for 12 months in NSW. The Australian Resuscitation Council and SafeWork NSW both require annual renewal to ensure CPR skills remain current with updated guidelines. Even if you hold a full first aid certificate (HLTAID011), your CPR component must be renewed annually.
Yes. If you hold a current HLTAID011 first aid certificate but only need to renew the CPR component, you can book HLTAID009 alone for $55. You don’t need to repeat the full first aid course just to renew CPR — unless your entire first aid certificate has also expired (3-year validity).
The total course takes approximately 2–3 hours. Online theory takes under one hour to complete at your own pace on any device. The practical assessment takes approximately 1.5–2 hours. Most students complete the entire course — from online enrolment to certificate in hand — within a single half-day session.
CPR (HLTAID009) covers only cardiopulmonary resuscitation — specifically how to respond to cardiac arrest, including compressions, rescue breathing, and AED use. First Aid (HLTAID011) includes CPR plus a much broader range of emergency skills including management of bleeding, burns, fractures, asthma, anaphylaxis, stroke, choking, and full emergency scene management. Most workplaces require HLTAID011 rather than CPR alone.
