Nationally recognised CPR courses in Penrith and Sydney wide

Training in CPR with Prudent Training Services will give you all the skill sets needed to attain a level of competence to provide CPR. You will gain the knowledge to complete the assessment in HLTAID009 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation.

Cardiac arrest is a medical emergency that can lead to death. With urgent medical care to restart the heart, survival is possible.

Quick decision making is required to recognise and assess a cardiac emergency, call for medical assistance and perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) procedures which will increase the chance of survival for a person who is unconscious and not breathing normally.

In this CPR course, you will learn these skills, in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines, including using an automated external defibrillator (AED), how to rotate first aiders with minimal interruptions to compressions, and what to do if the casualty regurgitates or vomits.

The course also covers conveying accurate incident details when handing the casualty over to emergency services, how to review an incident, to recognise any psychological impacts on self and other rescuers, to seek help if required and for improvement of own personal skills and response times.

Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation – CPR

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation or CPR is an effective method of maintaining oxygenated blood flow to vital organs of the body. You should use CPR in the event someone is unconscious and not breathing or not breathing normally.

The Australian Resuscitation Council (https://resus.org.au/) is the organization that provides guidelines for the provision of First Aid techniques including CPR. There is also a NSW branch of the ARC (http://arcnsw.org.au/about/).

When to use CPR

When providing CPR, the ARC recommends 30 chest compressions followed by 2 breaths (30:2).

Of course you should only administer breaths if you are willing and able. However, the casualty has a greater chance of survival with administered breaths.

Ideally the person administering CPR should be trained. Should a casualty be not breathing or not breathing normally, commence CPR within 3 to 4 minutes of the incident.

There are variants to CPR such as for children between 1 to 8 years of age and up to 25 kilos. Use 1 or 2 hands  along with sufficient air to inflate the lungs without causing injury. But for infants 0 to 12 months of age, use 2 fingers instead of hands.

When providing breaths to an infant, only use small puffs (about the amount of air in your mouth) in order to avoid injury to the infants lungs.

CPR is taught as part of a First Aid course. Additionally the ARC recommends to undertake a refresher course in CPR every 12 months.

There are many incidents where you may need CPR. For example, someone might drown, suffer a sudden cardiac arrest or get electrocuted. In fact, knowing what to do in the event of an emergency may be the difference between life or death.

Finally, remember: when going to someone’s aid, check for danger to yourself, others and the casualty. Above all, never put your life in danger.

You can never predict when you may need to administer CPR to someone who through illness or accident has stopped breathing. Such incidents can be as a result of drowning or electrocution, but the vast majority of times it is as a result of a cardiac arrest, with about 20-25,000 cardiac arrests in Australia every year.

Having CPR administered can significantly improve a patient’s chances of making a full recovery and whilst nearly everybody knows this a staggering small number of Australians, some reports indicate as few as 5%, are trained to give CPR.

Prudent Training offer a range of nationally recognised training courses in First Aid, including CPR training in Penrith. Training is delivered in partnership with our partner, Allen Training Pty Ltd and is based on Guidelines from the Australian Resuscitation Council.

Training itself will include some online learning and also face to face training & assessment which will involve the student demonstrating necessary skills and techniques on a manikin in order to successfully pass the assessment. AEDs (defibrillators) are now commonly found in public areas such as schools, shopping centres gyms etc and proficiency in the use of these devices is a key element of the training.

Approved techniques for CPR have evolved over recent years and while it is laudable to receive training it is equally important to undertake periodic refreshers to ensure that you keep abreast of any changes.

CPR is a lifesaving tool in a case of emergency where a casualty loses consciousness and stops breathing. Early intervention with CPR within the first 4 minutes of the scenario unfolding significantly increases the chances of the subject making a full recovery, but in Australia over 70% of the population do not have the necessary skills, knowledge or experience to administer emergency life support – Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

At Prudent Training Services we provide CPR training in Penrith which will impart all the necessary skills and techniques to deal with all eventualities where CPR is required, including the use of Automated External Defibrillators (AED), the varying approaches to CPR for infants and children and how to continue CPR for prolonged periods as part of a team. Our comprehensive training is delivered by highly qualified and experienced trainers/assessors and meets all of the requirements of the Australian Resuscitation Council Guidelines.

Training and assessment can be undertaken at our location or by prior arrangement at your workplace. The only criteria for attending are that you have the physical ability to perform 2 minutes of CPR on an adult manikin whilst kneeling on the floor and an infant manikin and have access to the internet to complete online sections of the training prior to the face-to-face assessment. Once you have passed the assessment at the conclusion of your training you will be awarded a certificate. It is recommended by the Australian Resuscitation Council that CPR training is completed every 12 months.
